How to choose affiliate marketing products

There are many things to consider when planning the marketing strategy of your online business, and as renowned marketing consultants will tell you, one of the most important is your choice of affiliate marketing products.
There are numerous other factors to consider too, of course, not least where you advertise online; whether you buy Overture pay per click advertising, from Yahoo! or Google adwords, or both, and what other sources you drive your traffic from.
But for the purpose of this lesson, we will be looking at the choice of affiliate marketing products your internet marketing company needs if you are to maximize your revenues and profits.
Following are the chief considerations when looking at affiliate schemes:
1. How does the product compliment the rest of the service your internet marketing company offers.
If you have a website, or a newsletter, serving customers in the internet marketing niche, for example, there is a wide selection of affiliate programmes available for you to choose from.
And the wonder of this niche is that someone who joined your list at an opt-in page offering a free ebook on “web 2.0 traffic generation”, for example, is also likely to be interested in a product for creating squeeze pages, or on list-building techniques or even pay-per-click advertising secrets.
You can therefore spread your net quite wide when it comes to choosing affiliate programs. They don’t necessarily all have to be about web 2.0, just because that’s what they signed up for in the first place.
What you can’t do, however, is join an affiliate program for weight loss, or dog-training, and expect to sell it to the list who signed up for “web 2.0 traffic generation”. Even though there might be some people who are interested in either of these products on your list. You are not the person they would expect to buy them from.
This means, not only will they not buy, but – and this is far more serious – you could lose future customers by tarnishing your reputation in your field.
So, lesson number 1 for picking the right affiliate program to present the right affiliate marketing products to an existing list:
Stick to the subject area your prospects signed up for.
2. Selecting online marketing products from Clickbank
As an affiliate, there are a wide selection of affiliate marketing engines you can choose from to find your affiliate programs. Clickbank is leader of the field for all digital (downloadable) products.

As a member of clickbank you can develop successful strategies for email marketing and for website marketing. In both cases you will be using your unique affiliate link supplied by Clickbank.
Whether you’re doing it for web marketing, network marketing or email marketing, the first statistic you should look at when picking a product on Clickbank is its “Gravity” figure. This is a percentage, calculated by Clickbank which gauges how popular a product is.
Gravity values range from 0% to 900% – the highest value being the most popular. As a rule of thumb, and because you can afford to be quite ruthless, its not worth choosing an affiliate marketing product with a gravity value of less than 100%.
The next thing to consider is how much you’ll be paid per sale and how it weighs up against the commission for that product.
You would not want to promote, for example, a product which sells for $97, if you’re only getting $10. 10% for a digitally downloaded product is a very low commission percentage.
Typically, commissions on Clickbank range between 50% and 75%. There are exceptions to this, but as long as you’re getting somewhere between those figures for your internet marketing services in selling the product, then you are being fairly rewarded.
So there you have two major considerations that can help you to select the right affiliate marketing products for your target market.
