Part 1 of 4. The cost of doing business online is falling rapidly such that any business can avail itself of the power offered by an online presence. Whereas website hosting once cost thousands of dollars ten years ago, today the price is only a few dollars per month.
Before getting started, we first must define what we mean by website marketing. Put simply, whereas traditional marketing methodologies harness the power of newspapers, radio and other forms of media, website marketing sells goods and services by utilizing the unique opportunities presented by websites, email and search engines.
According to Wikipedia, here are the definitions of phrases that you need to know about when studying Website marketing:
The world wide web is a global interlinked network of hypertext documents. Navigable via browser, users can view a vast array of text and multimedia content in an interconnected manner.
These documents are served up via a web server, a computer program that accepts requests from the user’s browser and sends back the specified document or content. Web servers communicate with browsers via the HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
Each Web server has its unique global address to find it over the Internet. This address is called an “IP address and its role is like this: “A name indicates what we seek. An address indicates where it is. A route indicates how to get there.” For example, 63.146.123.0 is the address of the server where google.com is situated.
Each individual web server can host numerous websites, each with its own unique domain name, content and IP address. This has become common for hosting companies, and is the reason behind the marked decrease in website hosting costs.
The domain name system (DNS) is a network of servers which translates cryptic IP addresses into domain names, thus making them available in a form readable by human and computer alike. In this way, any resource connected to a network can have a globally unique, easily memorable name that helps it to be found much more easily.

Website Marketing: What You Should Understand Before Getting Started (Part 4)

Part 4 of 4. Once you’ve designed your website, chosen an appropriate domain name and selected a web host that meets your needs, you then put the website in place on the host. When everything is in place and linked together, customers can enter your business’s domain name into their address bar and learn all about what your business has to offer. This, broadly speaking, is how a website marketing strategy works.
Using a Web browser, a visitor views your Webpages. These pages contain text, images, and other multimedia. And the visitor navigates between them using hyperlinks. A client program called a “user agent” retrieves information resources, such as Webpages and other computer files, from Web servers using their URLs.
Most of the time, the user agent is a Web browser such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla FireFox, Opera, Netscape, or the program that you used to check out this Webpage. The user agent retrieves content from remote Web servers where the Website is stored and displays it on the visitor’s computer. The visitor can then click on hyperlinks on each Webpage to other Webpages or World Wide Web resources, whose location (including their domain name) is included in the hyperlinks. This is called “browsing” or “surfing” the Web.
With such a vast wealth of information from which to choose, finding a specific site can be a challenge. You can of course type a domain name into the address bar, but this helps little if you aren’t sure which domain to type. You may also wish to find websites on a specific topic rather than navigating to them individually by name.
This problem is addressed by search engines, of which Google, Yahoo! And Bing (formerly MSN Live) are the most influential. This popularity inspires many webmasters to make them key players in their website marketing campaigns, and inclusion in all of these generates a great deal of free traffic.
Additionally, consider using email to market your Website and business. Email is “a store and forward method of composing, sending, storing, and receiving messages over the internet. Email predates the Internet [and was a crucial technology in its creation.
Email is an attractive tool for website marketing because it costs nothing to send. Plus, an auto-responder system only costs a few dollars per month and makes building lists of current or potential clients a snap. With such a list, you can automatically mail special offers and newsletters, maintaining customer mindshare throughout their busy lives.

Part 2 of 4. Your IP address is like a physical street address, while your domain name is like the name on your business’s nameplate. You might own the entire building at a given address, or you may share it with others. Regardless of which is the case, the information associated with your address is sufficient for customers to find and transact business with you.
This is a critical point to keep in mind, because many businesses think that they need an entire server when this often isn’t the case. Whether your address is in a standalone building or a shared office matters little to you or your customers, as long as the available resources are sufficient. Also, just as renting office space often makes more sense than does buying an entire building, so shared hosting is often a better and less expensive choice.
Websites are comprised of webpages, written in a language called HTML. Readable via web browsers on computers, webpages can link to other pages or content via hypertext links.
As such, any business’s first step into online marketing, regardless of type or age, is to build its website. Many businesses make the mistake of selecting a domain name first. This places you at a disadvantage, however, as search engines typically rank pages higher if their main keyword is in the domain name. For instance, our business involving ?SEO? and ?web design? sports the domain name ?AceSEOWebDesign.com.? This helps improve the relevance of search results, as search engines are smart enough to know that a site called ?cars.com? won’t be selling many boats.
Also, in some markets, you may be more successful if you represent yourself as a specialist. Say, for instance, that you’re running a business called ?Harriet’s Flower Shop.? Online flower shops are quite common, and your business may struggle to distinguish itself. If you like a specific flower, however, then it may make more sense to market your business as the less competitive ?Harriet’s Orchids.? Then, once your business is thriving, you may consider branching out and selling more flowers online.
However, you must also be careful not to be too tightly focused. In this example, focusing on “pink orchids” might be too narrow as not many people might be looking for them. When choosing your site’s theme, think of yourself like Goldilocks and look for the bed and porridge that’s “just right”.
If having your keyword in the domain name is so important, then how have companies like Google, Ebay, Twitter, Facebook and others come to be successful? Quite simply, they are synonymous with what they do. The word ?Google? has become entrenched as a verb in our modern vernacular, and we often think of it when searching online. Similarly, Twitter and Facebook are memorable social networking sites that have generated a large amount of buzz. While Ebay has its own distinct brand today, it began life as auction.com before changing its domain name after becoming a success.
It is also possible to point multiple domains at a single website, though there are several points to keep in mind when adopting this practice. One of our clients, an insurance agent in Jacksonville Florida named Matt Moss, wanted us to build a website reachable at ?MossInsurance.com.? We felt that there were three problems with this domain name.

Website Marketing: What You Might Want To Understand Prior To Starting (Part 3)

Part 3 of 4. — The term “insurance” is too broad, and is subject to fierce competition. If your business isn’t listed in the first two pages of search results then its likelihood of being noticed is quite low, and most of the top insurance companies are billion dollar businesses. As such, the chances of a small business ranking favorably with such a keyword are quite low.
– Just as with our flower shop example above, Matt could benefit by specializing. There are many types of insurance: home, car, life, etc. Unless he sells every type, it makes little sense to use such a generic term. Even if he does sell many types of insurance, it makes more sense to create a unique site customized for each type than it does to lump them all together.
Upon sharing our concerns, Matt decided to specialize in car, home and boat insurance. While this was a great first step, even these terms are quite competitive, so the next phase in Matt’s web marketing strategy was finding the right terms to help get him noticed.
Well, we uncovered three profitable terms that had a good demand and not much competition. (BTW, never go into business that has no competition because that means no demand unless you’re a pioneer) They were: “homeowners insurance”, “classic car insurance” and “yacht insurance”.
Matt chose to specialize in homeowners insurance, as it was a subject with which he was most familiar, while leaving the opportunity ope for future expansion into his other specializations later. Matt’s choice was sound on several levels. While representing himself as a homeowners insurance salesman online, nothing prevents him from building trust with clients and selling them classic car or yacht insurance at a later date. Had he positioned himself as a generic insurance salesman, he likely wouldn’t have gotten noticed. Similarly, had he specialized in car or boat insurance then his future expansion would be limited by the fact that those purchasing these types of insurance already owned homes.
Also, while the internet is global, most of Matt’s business will be relatively local. It would make little sense for someone in Oregon to do business with him, for instance. As such, we registered the domain named “Florida-homeowners-insurance-choices.com.” While this name is great for search engines, it is difficult to remember and even worse for printing on business cards. To that end, we also registered “MossHomeownersInsurance.com” and pointed it at his main domain name. As such, Matt has the best of both worlds for his website marketing strategy: a search engine optimized domain as well as one that is easy to remember and say.
All this is to say that you shouldn’t register a domain name first. Instead, let us do the research to find the most profitable keywords for your business.
